Fact and Fiction about the Building There has been some information going around about the condition of the Texas Christian Church building...some of it fact, and some of it fiction. FACT: Over the years, moisture, bugs, and simply age have taken their toll on the foundation and floor joists of the building, and the time has come for them to receive attention. FICTION: "The church is about to fall in!" No, the church is NOT about to fall in! It is still safe to enter the building and worship there. But we do not want the condition to get any worse, so we are going to address it. We had an architectural engineer come in and give his assessment on the structure. He was impressed by the strength of the walls and roof, and pointed out the need for replacing the foundation and several of the floor joists. We have hired a contractor to perform these repairs, and he would like to begin in August. The time frame for the repair work will be about three months, weather permitting. During that time, we will still hold all of our regularly scheduled services (listed at left) in the new building.
A Step Back in Time
“In 1933 the Texas Christian Church near Maroa needed a minister,” a local paper reported in 1938. “The church was in bad shape. Sixteen- year-old Mr. Garriott took the charge and in three years the congregation was doubled.” Christopher Troy Garriott (above) was born and raised in Harristown, lived for a time in Maroa, and began preaching at Texas Christian Church while still attending high school. |
Baptism Service Being Planned A baptism service is being planned for later this summer or early fall. If anyone is interested in being baptized, or has questions about baptism, please see the minister as soon as possible so it can be scheduled.
Ladies Night on Friday, August 13 The ladies of Texas Christian Church have begun meeting on the third Friday evening of each month, bringing crafts and food and music to enjoy together in the new fellowship hall. Years after his ministry at Texas Christian Church, Chris wrote a novel entitled The Cypriot, about the New Testament character Barnabas. After his death in 2003, his son Max discovered the manuscript and had it published this year. Recently Max and his brother Dan visited Texas Christian Church and left several copies of the book behind. The book can be ordered at http://barnabasthecypriot.com
