A Step Back in Time

“In 1933 the Texas Christian Church near Maroa needed a minister,” a local paper reported in 1938. “The church was in bad shape. Sixteen- year-old Mr. Garriott took the charge and in three years the congregation was doubled.”

Christopher Troy Garriott (above) was born and raised in Harristown, lived for a time in Maroa, and began preaching at Texas Christian Church while still attending high school.

Years after his ministry at Texas Christian Church, Chris wrote a novel entitled The Cypriot, about the New Testament character Barnabas. After his death in 2003, his son Max discovered the manuscript and had it published this year.  Recently Max and his brother Dan visited Texas Christian Church and left several copies of the book behind.  The book can be ordered at http://barnabasthecypriot.com

Church Photo Directory Planned

LifeTouch, a photography company that specializes in photo directories for churches, will be at Texas Christian Church on Thursday, Feb. 2, at 1 p.m. At this time they will explain the process for putting together a church directory for us.

There is no cost for having the pictures taken, and a copy of the finished directory will be given to each church family for free. Packages of photos from the shots taken will be available for sale in a variety of sizes.

At this point a date has not been scheduled for the picture taking. The meeting on Feb. 2 will be informational in nature, and those attending will be able to ask questions about the process. So stay tuned for more information, and get ready to smile!

Men's Prayer Breakfast and Area Men's Fellowship

Texas Christian Church’s Men’s Prayer Breakfast will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 8:00 a.m. in the fellowship hall. All men of all ages are invited (and bring a guest along!) There is no charge for the prayer breakfast. Unlike the picture to the right, ties are not required!

This month we will enjoy breakfast pizza. (If you haven’t had that or even heard of that before, come out and discover something new!)

Each month the Area Men’s Fellowship meets on the first Tuesday evening for a time of food and fellowship. The Area Men’s Fellowship for February will be held on Tues., Feb. 7 at Saybrook Christian Church at 7 p.m. Come and join men from area churches in fellowship!

Valentine's Social Feb. 18

Texas Christian Church will again host a Valentine’s Social, this year on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 6:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall. An Italian dinner is being planned, along with some games and other fun. (Expect the “Not-So-Newlywed Game” to return!) Cost is $5 per person.

Winter Weather Cancellation Policy

Winter weather is always unpredictable, and some wonder how Texas Christian Church handles bad weather on a Sunday. In years past the church has cancelled church due to weather, but it has been decided to only cancel church if there is no power to the buildings. “We don’t expect anyone to risk their safety coming to church if they feel the weather is too bad,” Pastor Scott Marsh said, “but we also don’t want to tell folks they can’t come to church if they want to try.” If church is cancelled due to a power outage, phone calls will be made to everyone.
